How to Get a Good Job in Nigeria (Even If You Don’t Have Connection)

Getting a good job in Nigeria has become extremely competitive. Today, even bank jobs require an insider to ensure a CV is paid attention to. For those who have tried but do not seem to have anybody to help them out, we shall look at a way you can create job connections for your CV.

First, learn to avoid negative people, negative thoughts and negative expressions

Get negative thinking off your mind. This is the major hindrance to getting a good job in Nigeria. The truth that you should believe is that, there are lots of good jobs for whoever searches adequately.

When others say, there is no job, just whisper in your heart,

“There are still good jobs waiting somewhere. They can only be competitive and I can beat the competition”

Harness the power of the information age = Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn

Today, a lot of people spend so much time chatting and making friends on Facebook, and they hardly remember they can use the same channel to skyrocket their chances of getting a job.

Think about this for a moment. Many companies have pages or groups on Facebook. Also, their HR managers and other staff make friends on Facebook. That means, you can connect with them to create familiarity and more importantly, get to understand their recruitment system – how to apply and prepare.

Here is an example:

Someone who wanted to work with KPMG in Nigeria searched for KPMG Nigeria on Facebook. He checked out the people that were returned in the results and typed a simple letter to a couple of them (about ten):

“Hello, my name is Steven. I am a fresh graduate and I am a huge lover of KPMG. I’d love to work there after my NYSC. Please, add me as a friend. Thanks”

As expected, about four out of ten responded and became good friends with him. According to him, they served as encouragement because they could tell him when KPMG would be recruiting and how to apply successfully. They also let him know all the preparations he needed to make, how to prepare for their tests before he was finally called for interview.

In a nutshell, here you realize that connections needed to get a job can be artificially created. Apart from Facebook, a host of other resources can easily get you closer to the right people. The most important thing is to stop appearing as hungry job seekers. Make friends with the working class, offer free service sometimes and find every opportunity to get closer to the people that matter.

Avoid joining the thousands of hungry job seekers who beg for jobs on job boards. Those are the wrong places to plead for job because they do not have the power to give you that job. However, you should visit job boards regularly to know the current jobs and then do the right things.

Here’s a sound principle for networking

Traditionally, you are supposed to submit your applications to recruitment agencies; read Newspapers for vacancies and then network through your friends and families and also submit online applications. However networking is estimated to provide up to 65% of available jobs and should be a priority in your job search technique.

In networking, there are 4 different levels of job search:

· My friends or families

· The friend/family of my friend/family that I know

· The friend/family of my friend/family that I don’t know

· The people introduced to me by friends/family that I don’t know

You must have scaled these 4 categories before you can actually say you are a serious job seeker.
